New River Artisans was founded and is still owned and operated by the Satterwhite family. Sharing a desire for authentic living and a vocation in service of creativity, Leith and Neal Satterwhite have been designing and making rugs since 1981. Their five children, now adults, have each contributed to the creative management and marketing of the company.

Each rug is tufted with uncompromising workmanship by talented artisans of the New River Valley. They are made of 100% New Zealand wool, dyed to coordinate with designer specified fabrics and paints. Often they are enhanced with textural innovations and silk accents. The rugs are commissioned by some of the country’s most accomplished interior designers and can be found in luxury residences, resorts, commercial interiors, embassies, private aircraft and yachts nationwide and abroad.

As a premier manufacturer of custom, hand-tufted, wool and silk rugs to the trade, our company champions original design and environmental responsibility. Primary manufacturing materials are natural, renewable, and sustainable. The company operates in a renovated historic school building in the NC mountains.
